Gaming News DetailsUbisoft DRM Clamps Down on Hardware Changes
Ubisoft’s DRM has always been decried as some of the industry’s most invasive, and a new development will do little to change that reputation. According to a story in Rock, Paper, Shotgun, simply swapping out your video card will trigger the French publisher’s overzealous anti-piracy software. Each Ubisoft game is limited to a mere three “installations.” With this in mind, number-crunchers Guru3D were testing strategy title Anno 2070 on three separate PC’s. When they switched out the graphics cards to compare benchmarks, however, the game abruptly stopped working. As it turns out, Ubisoft’s games cannot distinguish between a new PC and an old PC with new hardware. This news surely marks a new low for relations between the publisher and the PC gaming community. Hopefully the issue is addressed soon, and gamers can continue to tinker with their rigs without having to worry about breaking their favorite games. |
